BOAT RACING COMES TO PATCHOGUE

Organizers hope to make "Battle on the Bay" an annual event

by Mark Nolan (The Long Island Advance - August 16, 2007)

Patchogue Bay will be temporarily turned into a floating drag strip on Sunday, Aug. 26 as nearly 50 speed boats take to the waves in the "Battle on the Bay" races, sponsored by Great South Bay racing Inc, OPA Racing and Patchogue Village.

The weekend-long event will conclude with a full day of races on Sunday.  On Friday, Aug 24, Main Street in Patchogue will be closed from North Ocean Avenue to West Avenue to allow spectators to view the boats up close and personal.  Saturday the boats will be in the pits at Shorefront Park and Fireman’s Park and some test runs will be held on the bay.  The races kick off on Sunday at noon with several classes and heats.

“There will be a lot of action; big roosters tails and spinout,” says Louie Giancontieri of Great South Bay Racing Inc., who will be competing in Strictly Business, the current national points leader.  “Hopefully we’ll make it an annual race.”

Giancontieri said motorboat racing is exciting because wave patterns and currents change constantly.  “I used to race cars but with the water changing constantly and different wave patterns coming in, every lap is different,” Giancontieri said.

The race course extends from Sandspit Dock to Howell’s Point in Bellport.  Giancontieri said the Patchogue and Bellport fire departments, U.S. Coast Guard and Suffolk County Marine Police Bureau will be on hand during the race to ensure safety.  The course will be off-limits to recreational boaters, and race organizers will have about 20 patrol boats and a helicopter patrolling the area.

Fans can watch the races from Shorefront park, Sandspit Dock or anywhere along the shore.  There will also be recreational boater viewing areas in the bay for those who want to as close to the action as possible.  “I’m a boater and I personally think four hours floating around out there can be a bit much, but at a lot of races you see guys out there for five, six hours at a time,” Giancontieri said.

The weekend will feature Miss GEICO, the fastest boat in the world according to Giancontieri.  The turbine-powered catamaran can exceed speeds of 200 mph.

The event is open to local boat enthusiasts.

Winter Holiday Parade
Main Street, Patchogue, NY
November 24, 2007

10-15,000 Spectators lined Main St. as the Parade made it's way through the city. Along with the Bands, Fire Dept.s, Police, Rescue, Antique Cars and tons of other marchers were 5 OPA Raceboats.
1) Reinforcer
2) Dock Blood
3) JC Performance
4) In a Hurry
5) Strictly Business

Thanks to everyone who helped decorate the boats and supported our race announcement.  People in the crowd were calling out race teams names from last summers race!!  You guys are famous.  Some kids were yelling Wazzup!! at the "Strictly Business" boat, they were having a grand ole time till I accidently fired the flare gun at them.  Scotty, Marc, Haggin and team Gieco are a household name and will probably be elected to office this summer.  As we walked through town after the parade, it seemed everyone had there own favorite team.  When the little kids asked where so an so was I said there helping Santa.  Well I'm sure the OPA's little helper is going to have some great pictures to post.

Thank You All,   Louie
